Pest Management for Vegetables

Growers are kept abreast of pesticide label changes, how to maximize the use of new products, and the expected performance of new products through industry-sponsored "update" meetings and field days. To find out which programs are being offered in the near future, please consult the Dade Vegetable Grower (newsletter).  You can also call Mary Lamberts at (305) 248-3311 X234 and ask to be put on the fax notification list.

Growers and industry representatives can learn how to use the DDIS system for submitting digital images and/or diagnostic samples.

This office has supported the IR-4 Project’s petition to the US EPA to include okra in the fruiting vegetables group.

Improving Small Farm Vegetable Production

This program is aimed at growers who are not producing traditional winter vegetables, but rather specialty crops including tropical root crops, Asian vegetables, herbs, an so on. A major focus at this time is developing production budgets for at least a few crops (more will be added).

Another program focuses on practices to improve the quality of boniato sweet potatoes. To date trials with grower cooperators have included the use of Imidan™ in rotation with traditional insecticides and the use of Botran™ as a pre-plant and post harvest dip fungicide. Future trials will likely focus on herbicides for weed control. For more information, contact Mary Lamberts at (305) 248-3311 Ext. 234.
