The Miami-Dade County Events

The Miami-Dade County Events is soon approaching and now is the time to start getting your youth’s entry registered into the 4-H office.

The final registration to County Events for:  illustrated talks, demonstrations and Share the Fun are April 2, 2009.  You can download all forms necessary at the bottom of this section.  You can do registration via mail, fax or internet by emailing your forms to Liz Gonzalez (liz1960@ufl.edu).

However, if you wish to hand deliver you can too.

Note:

* Regardless of category entered, the following regulations apply:

*No living vertebrates (i.e. fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, or mammals) may be brought to district or state level events.

*Demonstrations or illustrated talks must be between 3-12 minutes for juniors and intermediates, and 5-12 minutes for seniors.

*A team demonstration is one in which two team members participate both in speaking and presentation. No more than two members per team.

*State entries must have competed at the county/district levels. Participation guidelines for county/district level activities that do not culminate at the state level are at the discretion of planning committees at the county/district.

*Each presentation (i.e. demonstration, illustrated talk, Share-the-Fun activity, speech, etc.) will be the same from district level to state level. A 4-H’er should definitely improve on his/her activity but it must remain basically the same.

*If a 4-H’er is participating at the state level with a similar illustrated talk or demonstration to the previous year, the demonstration or illustrated talk must be changed to include more depth and growth.

*Participants must provide all equipment and supplies for their presentations.

*Competitors are responsible for all aspects of their preparations and set-up of their competitions. Only competitors are allowed in the set-up/dressing room at State Competitions

*In demonstration categories where one entry is needed to be recognized as the official state entry for a regional/national competition, the judges will be asked to select the overall entry from the 1st place individual and 1st place team, provided this meets respective national guidelines.

*During Florida 4-H Congress, individual 4-H’ers can participate in one demonstration OR public speaking OR Share-the-Fun event AND one judging/other event (i.e. Fashion Revue), as long as schedule permits. Please contact the State Events Coordinator to confirm Congress schedule for these events. Youth at county and district levels can be encouraged to participate in both demonstrations and judging or other events. 4-H’ers may compete in contests and be a council delegate.

Florida 4-H Age Requirements

Florida 4-H implemented new age divisions on September 1, 2006 to statewide events. All counties were encourages to have the new age divisions in place for their events by that time.

Eligibility for enrolled 4-Hers (those who have met previously stated enrollment criteria) is determined by the student’s age as of September 1 of the current program year for which they are enrolled. Any exceptions are noted under Participation Criteria with the event. Generally, age classifications for most events and activities are the following:

Ages 5 - 7: Cloverbud Division

Children under 8 years of age on September 1of the current 4-H year, are ineligible to participate in competitive activities at any level (Club, County, District, State, National or International). 5-7 year olds may exhibit or share project activities at a participation level (for feedback), against a predefined standard. Participation awards should be given to this group, but they should not be involved in Peer Competition.

Ages 8 - 10: Junior Division

Any 4-Her 8-10 years old as of September 1 of the current 4-H program year is considered a junior.

Ages 11 - 13: Intermediate Division

Any 4-Her 11-13 years old as of September 1 of the current 4-H program year is considered a intermediate.

Ages 14 - 18: Senior Division

Any 4-Her 14-18 years old as of September 1 of the current 4-H program year is considered a senior. Senior level 4-H participation in Florida begins at age 14, but the 4-Her must not have passed their 19th birthday or graduated from high school.
